There’s much to discover and experience in Obertraun on the southern shore of the idyllic Lake Hallstatt: hiking routes for all types, romantic spots, sport challenges, and winter wonderlands. Whether it’s through water fun on the lake, relaxing at the Koppenlacke, or a bike tour along Lake Hallstatt, boredom is never the case in Obertraun. In terms of experience-rich outings, Obertraun offers the nearby historical town of Hallstatt with its Salzwelten salt mine, numerous hiking paths and visits to the fascinating ice caves within the Dachstein Mountain or the impressive “5fingers” viewing platform on the Krippenstein. In winter, snow-hungry visitors can also find their hearts’ desires: freeriding, snowboarding, ski touring, and snowshoeing in the Freesports Arena Dachstein Krippenstein. From beginners to professionals, the Krippenstein has something for everyone. In both summer and winter, cosy mountain huts, such as the Lodge on the Krippenstein or the Schilcherhaus on the Gjaidalm, provide a relaxing finale to exciting hiking and thrilling skiing days. Boredom is yesterday’s news – today it’s all about Obertraun on Lake Hallstatt!

Note for hikers on the East Bank Hiking Trail
The east bank hiking trail will be closed between Obertraun and the Bad Goiser village of "Obersee" from 13 to 28 May 2024 from Monday to Thursday between 07:30 and 16:30 hrs. Exceptions are Friday, Saturday and Sunday, as well as Whit Monday. The East Bank Cycle Path is also affected. The excursion restaurant "Seeraunzn" is freely accessible by bike and on foot from Bad Goisern, even during the closing times.

Ferry service on Lake Hallstatt suspended
The ferry service between Hallstatt train station and Hallstatt center is expected to be suspended until 15.05.2024, due to massive storm damage to the railway line. As an alternative for hikers, we recommend a crossing from Obertraun to Hallstatt with the old salt ship "Navia". Or with the round trip boat of the Hallstätter Seeschiffahrt from the stops "Obertraun", "Hallstatt Markt/Centre" and "Hallstatt Lahn".
Advice for international travellers
In the case of the rail replacement service from the "Steeg-Gosau" station, the bus that takes you to Hallstatt or Obertraun is already waiting for you at the station forecourt. All you have to do is change - from the train to the bus. You can then get off directly in the towns of Hallstatt and Obertraun! If you have any questions about this, please contact the train staff (conductor).
